Review - Song Of Madeleine

Origins

The Editor

Origins

When I was in the fourth grade I was assigned to write a haiku. Mine was about a frog. I can't recall my words but I will never forget how I felt when the teacher handed it back and said, "Leslie, haiku isn't supposed to be cute."

How often is creativity stifled because it produces other than what is "supposed" to be? I'm not saying we shouldn't have standards, I've been in enough writing workshops to know we need them.

But I have noticed that good writing may go unread if it doesn't conform to a "should." And I have seen published works that fit current trends, but have no substance.

So... The Poet's Cut. I always like the "director's cut" - the movie as it was envisioned before marketing got through with it - better than the screen release. I want good poetry - but I want that original voice. The way it sounded before someone said "it isn't supposed to be like this." And if that means it's raw, or strange, then that's the way it shall be.
